Mitrêka: A Platform for Student Ideas in Fianarantsoa

An upcoming initiative aims to give students in Madagascar the opportunity to publish their work, earn recognition, and share their ideas beyond the classroom.

What can students tell us about the future of education, science, and the environment in Madagascar ? From improving rural condition to developing sustainable practices, their research and observations can offer valuable perspectives on challenges facing their communities.

Mitrêka is a planned student writing and presentation competition designed to bring those perspectives to a wider audience.

We adopted the the motto “Manidinika ny androany, mibanjina ny hoavy” — reflecting on today while looking toward the future — the initiative will encourage students to examine real-world issues, develop informed arguments, and communicate their ideas to the public.

From student work to published ideas

At the heart of mitrêka is a simple opportunity: students can turn their research, observations, and original ideas into published work. Participants will be able to submit articles of up to 900 words, short videos of up to five minutes, or whiteboard presentations. Submissions may be written or presented in Malagasy, French, or English. The competition will focus on three broad areas : education, science, and the environment. Topics could range from educational inequalities and local cultural knowledge to farming practice, climate change, renewable energy, and waste management.

Selected contributions will be featured on Diffusion Global's website, giving students a platform to share their work with readers beyond their university.

Recognition, prizes, and a chance to take the stage

The proposed competition includes three seasonal cycles — asotry, asara, and volambita — with regular selections of outstanding contributions. Selected students will receive prizes and publication opportunities. Seasonal winners will also have the chance to present their ideas at mitrêka event, an end-of-academic-year event inspired by the format of TED Talks, where students can engage with an audience and receive recognition for their work.

The initiative is being developed in Madagascar through Sahamaitso, a Malagasy organization fiscally sponsored by the U.S.-based nonprofit Diffusion Global Inc., with planned collaboration involving the University of Fianarantsoa, including EMIT, ISTE, and the Office of the University President.

Mitrêka event is intended to give students something that academic work does not always provide: an opportunity to be read, heard, and taken seriously outside the classroom. Following a postponement, organizers are targeting late 2026 or January 2027 for the launch. The official schedule, submission guidelines, and prizes will be announced once arrangements are finalized.
